Beth

[Verse 1]
Way out where the blacktop ends,
Gravel roads and a tin roof rain,
Daddy Jerry working past sundown,
Mama Susan at the window pane,
Two little girls on a porch swing,
Deidra and Beth, cut from the same grain.

[Chorus]
You keep your Bible by the coffee,
And a coupon in your purse,
You can make the whole room laugh
On a day that's been the worst,
You feed us, pray us, carry us,
Like Mama taught you first.

[Verse 2]
I wandered down a darker road,
And broke more hearts than just my own,
Mama's, Daddy's, little Carter's too,
I left you standing all alone,
You were furious, you had every right,
But you rode with me to turn myself in that night.

[Chorus]
You keep your Bible by the coffee,
And a coupon in your purse,
You can make the whole room laugh
On a day that's been the worst,
You feed us, pray us, carry us,
Like Mama taught you first.

[Bridge]
Then the storm came for our Mama,
And in 2021 we held her hands,
You and me beside her bed,
Sang her home to the promised land.

[Verse 3]
Now you're starting first grade, brave and new,
Cedric by your side, Carter growing tall,
And you love my Hannah and my Lily
Like your very own through it all,
You forgave me, Beth, the way He does,
And Mama's smiling down on you.

[Chorus]
You keep your Bible by the coffee,
And a coupon in your purse,
You can make the whole room laugh
On a day that's been the worst,
You love us all with open hands,
Like Mama taught you first.

[Outro]
Way out where the blacktop ends,
Two girls still singing Mama's song,
I'm Deidra, and I thank God, Beth,
I've had my sister all along.
